I found Jean-Baptiste Miro, the director of Sublime Erotica, in his video studio musing over the curvy silhouette of an embracing couple. He agreed to take a moment out of his day to talk to me about his project and its latest fame in the Danish press.
What is your background?
I am a Dutch-Canadian film-maker, and I have been working mostly with documentaries about different paths of human self-development. I have also been on a personal search for meaning, and I spent some considerable time in Asia. There I had my first real contact with Tantra and the oriental arts of sexuality. I began to study and practice tantra myself.
One of the documentary projects brought me to Denmark to work with a Scandinavian film-maker. When I got here I began to study at Natha Yogacenter. I find the Natha courses are really in depth and comprehensive in their perspective on human existence and the spiritual life.
What made you start this new style of erotic films?
I noticed a significant lack in the world of erotic movies of anything that expressed spiritual ideas in terms of the sexual experience to show the goals and potential of elevated sex. Some independent feature films, and Hollywood have worked with the subject with films like Bliss and Don't Look Down, but I wanted to explore the essence of sublime eroticism by working explicitly with the erotic scenes. I feel it is an excellent opportunity to expand my knowledge of film-making and of Tantric sexuality.
It also fits very well to start this initiative here in Denmark which was once a pioneer in opening the genre of erotic film, and is still a leader in an open social discourse about sexuality and erotic art.
What is Sublime Erotica?
Sublime Erotica is my private film production company, and personal project for artistically expressing some of the poetry I feel is inherent in the love-making experience. I feel that a lot of people either don't dare to or don't know to explore the deeper levels of sexuality, which are really accessible to anyone who has sex!
Sublime Erotica is still in its start up phase. I'm still learning about the erotic genre and about sacred sexuality, but I am excited about the project and I hope it expands a lot. My vision is to create a trend of sublime erotic art, so that people interested in erotic films can choose to see something elevated, really beautiful, with love and intimacy as I believe eroticism should be.
What is your connection with Natha?
I take classes and have friends at the Natha Yogacenter. I can say that I have drawn inspiration for my work from the teachings I have received there, and that some of the people I know there, and have known for years in some cases, became part of the project. Obviously, for me to make films about spiritual sexuality, I need to find people who have experience in this field, so when I told my colleagues at Natha about my project, I was very happy that some of them liked the idea and even agreed to be a part of it.
I am aware that a local journalist has speculated about the connection between my company and the yoga school. The journalist didn't contact me about it and got the facts wrong. First of all, I own my web domain, www.sublimerotica.com, and not any teacher from Natha. I also filmed a scene on the premises of a business that was in the same building that Natha occupied last year, but I have never had any official, administrative or financial connection with Natha.
As to the financial insinuations in the Jylland Post's article, I want to make it clear that my company is just starting and I have invested my own funds and time to start it. I have yet to recover my investment or make a profit, and I am not yet making films at the scale of production referred to by my distributor Bjarne Nygaard. Again, there is no financial connection between Natha Yogacenter and my company Sublime Erotica.
