Yoga

What is Yoga?

by Gregorian Bivolaru

Yoga is an extremely complex spiritual tradition, having a history older than five thousand years.
It possesses a very rich and extensive literature.

Yoga is what we traditionally call "the knowledge of liberation". We all seek, consciously or not, to rise above the limited notion of what we are. More exactly, we seek to rise above what we usually think we are. Generally, we identify ourselves with our body, our mind, with our possessions or relationships, bringing all this together in what we normally call "my life". These mental habits do not contain anything but shadows of the truth inside ourselves, and they bury us more deeply in ignorance .

Yoga offers a path for deep introspection with the goal as Truth. We all desire to know ourselves, at least to some extent, but is this not an illusion? If we knew at least 50% of ourselves, do you think we would suffer due to work and family problems? On the contrary, we would find out that we are immortal; we are superconscious and omnipotent beings; and we would find the source of eternal happiness.

Genuine Yoga implies confrontation with the fascinating mysteries regarding the nature of our microcosmic self. It deals with the eternal questions: Why was I born? Where do I come from? What do I live for? What is going to happen to me after I die? Who am I actually?
Yoga confers inner freedom and the understanding of the fact that everything is possible, though not all is allowed. Being liable to some unchangable laws, as human beings we all feel limited and impotent when faced with the difficulties of life. Yoga induces the power and energy to handle these challenges in life. Moreover, Yoga enables us to overcome the human condition and to reveal our divine nature, the Divine Self within (Jivatman).

Yoga is a science of immortality. It contains the methods for becoming fully aware of the mysterious aspects of being human. It allows for the employment of all the hidden potentialities within ourselves, for elimination of limitations due to ego, for deepening of self-knowledge; and reaching immortality.

Yoga aims to gain direct, immediate knowledge of ultimate truth regarding man, existence, and the Universe.

Yoga leads to bliss (samadhi). Although this word exists and is common in every language, the word ''samadhi'' denotes a state accessible to only a small number of people. Experiencing this bliss means to be in full resonance with the beneficial energies of the Universe. By reaching the state of samadhi or full bliss, the yogi gets confirmation of ''completion''. This is where the ineffable fusion occurs between man''s ultimate essence and the Supreme Macrocosmic Universal essence, God.

karmayoga1KARMA YOGA is the path of detached action which makes possible the spontaneous tuning of the aspirant with the infinite divine  energies.  By carrying out his daily activities or social duties without any  attachment or desire for getting hold of the results or the  fruits of the action, the karma yogi is constantly purifies  his mind and accelerates his inner progress.

KARMA YOGA – Yoga of the Detached Action - is one of the main forms of YOGA. The purpose of this spiritual practice is the communion with God, the spiritual  liberation, the final completion. The karma yogi should remember as often as possible of this noble goal of his practice and should realize that actually everything he does - apparently - for others, he does for his own good, for he is the main beneficiary of his actions, which are  correctly integrated in this spiritual practice which is KARMA YOGA.

A research from the US shows that practices such as Yoga and Meditation can alter the way our genes are activated.
The research took place in Benson-Henry Institute for Mind/Body Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and the Genomics Center at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC).

The researchers showed that practices of Mind-Body such as various forms of yoga, meditation and prayer induce in the body a state called ‘the relaxation response’. This state is characterized by reduction in oxygen intake, increase in exhalation of nitric oxide, and lower psychological distress. Many scientists believe that the relaxation response is the opposite counterpart of the ‘flight or fight’ stress response, a basic impulse that human beings have in reaction to perceived danger. The ‘flight or fight’ response has already been shown by a number of studies to have a distinct pattern of physiological and gene expression changes – determining some genes with specific attributes to go into action. The researchers raised the hypothesis that in a similar way to the ‘flight or fight’ response, so the relaxation response would determine changes in the activation of some genes.

yoga relaxationLay down on the floor with your head towards the South (!) on a mat or on a blanket in a well ventilated room. Abandon your body on the floor. The hands are slightly away from your body, the palms are facing upwards. The legs are slightly apart from each other. Become aware of your body and of the floor.

Exhale several times, slowly and deeply.

Then focus your attention upon your left leg and relax the left leg from the toes to the pelvic area, on groups of muscles, from down to up. Experience in each of the relaxed area fine vibration, slight sensation of warming up, loss of the body limits.

Comparison between Sacred Esoteric Judaism and Sacred Esoteric Yoga

By Uriel Yariv

This article is based on a lecture that took place in the International Yoga congress 2010, which took place in Bucharest, Romania on 13-17.10.  This lecture won a prize for being one of the best lectures in the Congress, out of over 70 lectures and workshops.

Yoga and Kabbalah - Uriel YarivMy name is Uriel Yariv, I am form Israel and I have been practicing yoga for the past ten years.

Born to Jewish family and raised in a regular Jewish environment, I grew up in believing that Judaism is nothing more than an external social tradition which has as a goal keeping the nation united in a colorful, folkloric way.

The external form, of so called spiritually, was not at all attractive for me, I was searching for altered states of consciousness and for real esoteric knowledge and experience.  I did not wish to follow some tradition blindly and just to obey what I was told, I wanted to understand and more then this, I wanted to feel spirituality.

There comes a time in life, when, in the midst of the chaos and mess in which you find yourself, you suddenly feel you can find an order and a meaning. You understand, all of a sudden, that whatever is happening to you - be it either good or bad – is happening because you deserve it, and that your destiny is really in your own two hands. This is a phase in which an inner something is telling you that there exists an order in the world, an order which you feel you can almost touch with the tip of your fingers. And then, suddenly, you start feeling at ease within an order which is bigger than you and including you. What a relief!

yoga norrebro, copenhagen•    If we look inside and outside of ourselves with attention and lucidity, we discover that in reality there are no urgent matters. This way we can realize that often there are only people in a rush.
•    All that is truly useful and valuable is always at our disposal, and is free of charge. A significant example of this is the Endless Energy of Love.
•    It is infinitely better to always appreciate ourselves with attention and lucidity, at our true worth, instead of despising ourselves.
•    To easily reach a state of contemplation, it is recommended that we try at least once every day to detach ourselves from spontaneous thoughts, and to let them drift past like clouds in the sky. When we enter such a state of contemplation, it is very good to aim to be life and not think of life.
•    Never lose sight of what is always available and extremely valuable. That mysterious something, omniscient, omnipresent and eternal, is God the Father embracing us tirelessly, even when we do not expect it.

Yoga considers the balanced lacto-vegetarian food that had completely excluded meat as a source of perfect health that will generate as inner reflex of our psyche an euphoric, complex state, quite consonant, consequent to the resonance to the subtle cosmic energies more or less in our proximity (i.e. up to a cosmic scale). Besides, the lacto-vegetarian food will trigger the complete balance of the being and its integration in the universal harmony, hence ineffable spiritual experiences will emerge in our inner universe.

YOGA is a genuine science of the human being and also a quite rigorous discipline, which unfortunately got rather coarsened and degraded in the West. As a term, YOGA stems in the Indo-European root, that could go in English for YOKE or JOIN, GATHER, MERGE, or BRING TOGETHER.

Stages and difficulties in sadhana - the spiritual training

In our SADHANA (the spiritual practice) countless traps can occur, which can divert us from the direct and ascending path leading us to the spiritual realization. Thus it’s necessary to have a larger view regarding the way we still have to follow, in order not to limit ourselves, not to stick permanently at the same stage. These basic aspects will help us much better know ourselves, clearly understand the stages we have already covered and also realize the stages we actually have to follow yet.

The wise men of the Orient, the Rishis, teach that Union with the Divine already potentially exists within us. However due to insufficient spiritual development, we are generally not conscious of this state of fusion with God, the Macrocosm. We see duality and multiplicity everywhere especially because of this ignorance regarding connection with the Macrocosm.
